Endearing

Very endearing – small tapestry named ‘les rats et les chats’ (1961) by Rawhia Aly, part of the exhibition ‘Let Texitiles Talk – six tapestries unravelled’ at the Stedelijk Amsterdam. The visit was a birthday treat that was postponed by Covid. The tapestry was made as part of an experiment in the ’60s by the Egyptian architect and educator Ramses Wissa Wassef, and his wife Sophie Habib Georgi. They intended to prove that creativity is innate and anyone can practice art. They set out to teach children who were ‘uninhibited’ and isolated from ‘modern civilization’ to weave tapestries. Dubious, this picking of a few ‘chosen ones’ then isolating them and having them be ‘unspoiled’. As I said, the tapestries themselves are endearing …
