Moving

My studio today is mobile – a small barge towed by an antique tugboat. Being transported by train, car or boat brings me to a meditative state, a state I cannot get into by simply sitting still. Apparently, continous movement makes my brain go quiet. Might also be that on the move there are relatively few things one can do.

One of the things I can do while being moved is read – am starting on ‘walking and mapping – artists as cartographers’ – very interesting so far for both the land surveyor and the artist. Am mining the book for strategies to map an area, strategies other than the mathematical, that is. Preferably original, too, even though this might just be bourgeois longing for authenticity.
